The Martin de Porres Center’s Rising Youth Program empowers youth in underserved communities in Columbus to advocate for themselves and build positive, healthy relationships within their families and communities.
Now in its 10th year, Rising Youth meets with students at area high schools, removing the barrier of transportation and creating comfort. Programming throughout the year aims to cultivate social-emotional skills, foster dialogue and empathy, build leadership skills, and teach non-violent conflict resolution in a safe environment.
Rising Youth is currently focusing on outreach to boys ages 13-18. Through games, conversation, speakers, and events for fathers and sons, the program aims to break down common barriers around sharing emotions and having open and honest dialogue.
Program coordinator and clinical psychologist Ixalia Ortiz, a new American who immigrated from Venezuela in 2018 and became a citizen in 2024, brings experience as a case manager at UMCH Family Services. There, she specialized in assisting immigrant families with acclimation and cultural adjustment. This lived experience gives Ixalia a unique perspective on the challenges faced by young first-generation Americans.
